THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE

1. WRITER:
Luke, who is thought to be the only gentile writer in the New Testament. He also wrote Acts.
Traveling companion of Paul (Col 4:14) (Phile 24). Called the 'beloved physician'. Wrote more in the New Testament than any other.

2. KEY VERSE:
(Lk 19:10) "For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost."

3. MAIN THEME:
Jesus The man - The gospel of the human life of the Son Of God.
     a. Written to the Greek to show Jesus as the perfect man.
     b. Christ's lineage traced back to Adam.
     c. Christ presented as true representative of universal man.
     d. Often referred to as the 'historical gospel'.

4. OUTLINE:
     A. The Evangelist's Introduction (1:1-4)
     B. Tabernacle In The Flesh (1:5-2:52)
     C. Testing Of The Second Man (3:1-4:13)
     D. Teaching Ministry In Galilee (4:14-9:50)
     E. Travel From Galilee To Jerusalem (9:51-19:27)
     F. Turning Point, Death and Burial (19:28-23:56)
     G. Triumphal Resurrection and Ascension (24)

5. NOTE:
The humanity of Jesus should be viewed in relationship to Rom 5:14-19 and 1 Cor 15:21,22,45,47. Here is the contrast shown between Adam and Jesus (the first and the last Adam). It would be helpful to draw a chart of what we have in Adam and what we have in Christ.

COMMENTS:
Luke shows Jesus as the ideal Man. There is an emphasis on prayer in the book. The book reveals that Luke was an investigative reporter. The gospel is referred to as the 'historical' gospel because of Luke's attention to historical facts. Luke addresses his book to Theophilus (as he also does Acts). Nothing more is known about Theophilus. Luke is the only gospel writer to mention Jesus visit to the Temple at 12 years of age and a brief glimpse of His early childhood.
