Overcoming By Faith
Mat 14:22-33

Jesus sent His disciples by boat into the sea of Galilee, while He went to a mountain to pray. Their boat was in the middle of a rough wind tossed sea when Jesus came to them walking on the water. They were frightened, but Jesus, seeing their fear, calmed them. Then Peter asked Jesus to bid him come out on the water. He did, and Peter got out of the boat walking on the water. However, when Peter saw the wind and waves, he began to sink and cried out. Jesus lifted him out of the water, back into the boat and the disciples worshipped Jesus.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the man who stretched a rope across a small part of the Grand Canyon and pushed a wheelbarrow across the rope a number of times as amazed onlookers gathered. He said, "How many think I can do it again?" Almost every hand went up. He then said, "Who will get into the wheelbarrow?" None of the crowd volunteered. Is is one thing to say you have faith , it is another to exercise it. Christian faith is committing ourselves to the Lord Jesus Christ. This supernatural event in the life of the disciples points to how we overcome the impossible. There are four important concepts mentioned:

MINIMIZE FEAR (27)
Jesus said, " it is I; be not afraid."

Fear paralyses. If you’ve ever experienced some moment in your life that was terrifying, you know what I mean. Your whole body tenses up, you can’t get yourself to even move. Certainly that was the reaction of the disciples in seeing Jesus. But Jesus, knowing their fear said, "Be not afraid, it is I". He is saying the same to each of us today. When troubled times come, be not afraid, look to Jesus, listen to His voice, see Him as the one who overcomes fear. Fear is caused by the unknown, the uncertain. We often let fear of man, or of circumstances, or of failure stand in the way of victory. Let Jesus remove your fear. The Bible says, (1 John 4:18) "Perfect love casts out all fear". Meditate on God’s love for you and develop your love for Him. That’s how to overcome fear.

MAXIMIZE FAITH (28)
"And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water."

Peter, seeing Jesus, asked to come out onto the water with Him. Jesus bid him come. Peter got out of the boat and started walking to Jesus on the water. Real faith is always accompanied with action. Faith goes hand in hand with activity. James said, (James 2:18) "I will show thee my faith by my works.." He wasn’t saying faith is not enough, he was saying there is something wrong with faith that doesn’t do anything. Faith gets out and gets moving. We grow in faith by exercising our faith, putting it in practice everyday. Jesus said, (Mat 17:20) If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to a mountain, be cast into the sea, and it would be so. Miraculous, seemingly impossible things can happen when we apply faith. Are you going through some difficulty today and you see no way out? Step out in faith and let Jesus show you great and mighty things.

MAINTAIN PERSPECTIVE (30)
"But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me."

Peter took his eyes off Jesus. That was a fatal mistake. Suddenly, he began to slowly disappear beneath the waves as fear overcame him. Peter cried out to the Lord, "Save me!". Jesus reached out His hand and lifted Peter above the waters. When fear took over his faith failed. Jesus said to him, "O ye of little faith, why did you doubt?" Our faith is only as strong as the object of our faith. When Peter turned away from Jesus and began looking at the waves, he lost his objectivity. The Bible says, (Heb 12:2), we are to be "looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith" He makes possible the victory, there is nothing in us that can overcome. Keep you eyes on Jesus, through prayer, through the study of His word, through fellowship. See Him in every circumstance of life.

MAGNIFY THE LORD (33)
"Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him,"

The disciples recognized Jesus as the One who made possible Peter’s walk on the water. They realized Jesus’ power and His ability. The result was instant worship. When you and I see God working in our lives, it should cause us to immediately bow at His feet. The Psalm writer said, "O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good and His mercy endures forever." And again "O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people." Are you magnifying the Lord today? Are you sharing with others all He means to you and all the good things He has done? May that be the priority in all that we do.

In a graveyard, by an old country church, is a tombstone that reads, She did all she couldn’t. That’s quite a testimony to the truth of (Phil 4:13), "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Yes, even seemingly impossible things. God bless.
