Finding Gods Word (2 Kings 22) The nation of Israel had gone into captivity, and Judah was being threatened. The people had turned from serving God to serving idols. Manasseh was king of Judah, and he was an evil king, an idolater. Following his death a good king named Josiah ascended to the throne. Josiah wanted to serve God. He tore down the idols his father served and started making many changes. One of them to rebuild and repair the temple which had been left in disrepair. How was it possible for the people of God to get to such a state? Heres the reason - GODS WORD FORGOTTEN (vs 5) And let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD: and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of the LORD, to repair the breaches of the house, It seems obvious that the people had strayed far from Gods will. The temple was filled with idols, the walls and floors in need of repair. Breaches in the walls were indicative of the breaches in the lives of the people. The nation had turned from the Lord who brought them into the land and gave them victory over the idolatrous inhabitants. And, now, with no thought and no time for the One True God, the people began to look to idols themselves. Such was the state of Judah and the people God had chosen to reveal His will to the surrounding nations. Whenever we neglect God and His word, you can rest assured of this, it will always end up worse before it gets better. Many lives are falling apart today, because they have completely forgotten the book. Are you taking time to find Gods will for your life? Get into the book. God has provided us with His word and His will. GODS WORD FOUND (vs 8) And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it. In all the debris, covered over by years of neglect, Hilkiah, the High Priest, makes an amazing discovery. It is the book of the law of the LORD. All the time, it had been there, but because of neglect, it had been completely forgotten. Today, many have forgotten God and His word. Others look at the word of God and say, "Its archaic, too old to be of any value." However, those who take the time to read it, see that it is just as relevant today as it was when it was first written. It is Gods book that helps us repair our lives. Have you discovered Gods word? Are you taking time to read and practice His will? If we are to have lives, with a sure and solid foundation, we need the book. Find a place for Gods word in your life today. Have a regular, systematic plan of Bible study, let God speak to you through His book. GODS WORD FOLLOWED (vs 11-13) And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes. And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Michaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asahiah a servant of the kings, saying, Go ye, inquire of the LORD for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us. Not only did they find the book, they read the book, and saw how far they had strayed from its teaching. They realized they were under the great wrath of God for not listening to His word. Today, we often talk about the love of God, but not a lot about the wrath of God. The reason God gave us His word, was to keep us from the judgment coming on the world. There is only one way of escape. It is found in the book. All have sinned, all are far short of pleasing God, but Jesus took Gods wrath on Himself that we might have peace. Its in the book. Have you reached out to Jesus? Have you followed His command? "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved." (Acts 16:31). The study of the word of God is a lifetime endeavor. Martin Luther gives a good example of how it is to be done. He said, "I study my Bible as I gather apples. First, I shake the whole tree that the ripest might fall. Then I shake each limb, and when I have shaken each limb, I shake each branch and every twig. Then I look under every leaf. I search the Bible as a whole like shaking the whole tree. Then I shake every limbstudy book after book. Then I shake every branch, giving attention to the chapters when they do not break the sense. Then I shake every twig, or a careful study of the paragraphs and sentences and words and their meanings." God bless.
