WHEN TROUBLE COMES (Job 5:7)
“Man is born unto trouble, as the sparks
fly upward.”
One thing we can count on in
this world is trouble. It comes in all sizes and shapes.
Sometimes it’s in the shape of finances; other times it’s
physical or emotional or even spiritual. Whichever way it comes
the results are the same, joy and peace are stolen away. Ed
Norton, comedian on a TV sitcom, called ‘The Honeymooners’,
once quipped, “When the tides of life turn against you, And
the current upsets your boat, Don't waste those tears on what
might have been, Just lie on your back and float.” While we
chuckle at the thought, it obviously reveals an attitude of
defeat. Don’t fight it just go with the flow. I believe God
has a better way. The next time you are faced with troubling
circumstances, here are four things the Bible tells us to do:
COMMIT IT TO GOD IN PRAYER (Mat 7:7)
“Ask and it shall be given you, seek and
ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you.”
Note the parallels in this
verse. God has given His word to those who seek Him in time of
trouble. He has committed Himself to those who pray. While most
would agree with the statement and the ability of God, they have
difficulty in saying that God would do it for them. Isn’t that
the same as unbelief? Every Christian can take comfort in these
words. Times of trouble are times to call on the name of the
Lord. Jesus said, “Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that
will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” (John
14:13) The One who tells us we will have problems tells us He
can solve them. Trust Him for the answer.
CLAIM GOD’S PROMISES (Psa 50:15)
“Call upon me in the day of trouble: I
will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.”
Here again God is giving us
His guarantee of help in time of trouble. Call, He says, and I
will, not might or perhaps, I will deliver. If God makes a
promise, who is going to stand in the way of its fulfillment?
When confronted with trouble our human nature says panic! God
says claim the promises. We should claim His promises everyday.
Ask Him for comforting, strength, healing, grace, guidance,
rest, peace, whatever you have need of today, God asks us to
trust Him for His promise of deliverance. As we claim God’s
promises we see His ability to meet every need. Our dependence
on God is a powerful testimony to the world.
CONSIDER GOD’S PURPOSE (Rom 8:28)
“We know that all things work together for good to them that
love God, to them who are the called according to his
purpose.”
This verse does not say that
everything that happens to us is good. . All things become
beneficial only when we let God take control. Notice also it
says this promise is for those who love Him. Do we love God
enough to trust Him when things we don’t understand take
place? These are times that can show us the powerful ability of
God. He can use financial difficulties to help us be more
dependent on Him. Physical troubles to remind us, He is the
Great Physician. In our weakness and anxiety God can reveal His
strength and give us a peace that passes all understanding.
Instead of looking at our problems as negative things, lets look
at them as times for spiritual growth and dependence on God’s
purposes.
COMFORT YOURSELF IN GOD’S PRESENCE (Mat
28:20)
“Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the
world.”
One of the hardest tings to do
is face trouble all alone. This verse says God cares enough to
share in our difficult times. As children are special to their
parents so Christians are very special to God their Father. He
has a genuine concern for you. If you are a parent and one of
your children came to ask or share some problem with you what
would be your reaction? Certainly you would not send them away
or tell them you’re not interested. But, even if you might,
God never would. He will share the suffering, sorrow or pain and
give you strength to get through. (Heb 13:5) says, “I will
never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” In good times and in bad,
God is there with you. There is great comfort in God’s
presence.
An elderly lady greatly
disturbed by her many troubles both real and imaginary was told
in a kindly way by her family, "Grandma, we've done all we
can do for you. You'll just have to trust God for the
rest." With a look of despair she replied, "Oh, dear,
has it come to that?" I fear that many face trouble with
the attitude that trusting God is a last resort. Actually,
facing trials by trusting God is the only sure way to victory.
Commit yourself to God’s care, claim His promise, consider His
love and comfort yourself with His presence. Christian, the One
who cared enough to send His Son to die in your place for your
sin cares enough to daily meet your every need. Are you reading
this and wondering if you are a Christian? The Bible says put
your trust in Jesus Christ alone as your sin bearer, and claim
His promise of sins forgiven to all who believe (Rom 3:23; 5:8;
10:9,10; 10:13). God bless.
