SEVEN C’s FOR THE NEW YEAR
(Jude (vs 17-25)
It is said the Babylonians started the
idea of New Year’s resolutions over 4000 years ago. However, they had
their celebration in March to coincide with spring planting. They believed
that what a person did on the first day of the New Year would have an
effect on the entire year. Many make resolutions today in the hope of a
better New Year. However, instead of a resolution I would like to
challenge you this year with a lifestyle. Here are seven guidelines from
Jude that should characterize this New Year and every year for believers.
CAUTIOUS OF SCOFFERS (18-19)
“But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the
apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; How that they told you there should be
mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.”
The world is actively attacking the word
of God. Not only in what they say, but also in what they do. Abortion,
living together without marriage, even attempting to clone human beings
are only a few ways it is going on. Scripture warns that the world is
hostile to believers. Be careful and be aware of their agenda. Exercise
vigilance regarding who and what you follow.
COMMITTED TO SPIRITUAL GROWTH (20a)
“Building up yourselves on your most holy faith”
We grow by applying the truths of
scripture to our lives. We cannot overemphasize the importance of a
regular time for Bible study and spiritual pursuits. If you do not have a
time for regular Bible study, make it a priority for this year. “Study
to show yourself approved unto God a workman that needs not be ashamed
rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Tim 2:15). Also, consider
reading a good book on how to study the Bible.
COMMUNICATING WITH GOD IN PRAYER (20b)
“Praying in the Holy Ghost”
It is said, Prayer changes things. I
like to think that prayer changes me. It makes me more aware of God’s
will and His direction in my life. It also gives me opportunity to raise
God for His blessings and ask Him to meet my needs as well as the needs of
others He brings to my attention. Pray for missions, church members,
opportunities to witness, physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Our God
is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we can ask or think.
CAPTIVATED IN GOD’S LOVE (21a)
“Keep yourselves in the love of God”
Keeping in God’s love is not a product
of self-effort. It is living in the love of God and allowing God to love
others through you. Jesus is our example, He said “As the Father hath
loved Me, so have I loved you; continue ye in My love.” A life of love
is to be a characteristic of believers. Ask God to help you experience
more of His love this year and rejoice that you are loved with an
everlasting love.
CONSCIOUS OF CHRIST’S COMING (21b)
“Looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.”
The next event in Bible prophecy is the
rapture. It will be in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye. Are you
ready? We need to live each day in the awareness of Christ’s soon
coming. Is there something you would like to do for someone? Don’t put
it off. Today may be your only opportunity.
CONCERNED FOR THE LOST (22-23)
“And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with
fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the
flesh.”
Witnessing is often one of the hardest
things for Christians. Some are not certain how, others are afraid they
may not be able to answer objections while still others don’t know how
to start a spiritual conversation. Just be you. Know the steps to
salvation and ask God to direct you in your witness. A good way to start a
spiritual conversation is to tell others about what God has done for you.
CONFIDENT IN GOD’S ABILITY (24-25)
“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you
faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only
wise God, our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now
and ever. Amen.”
Our God is able. He is never caught off
guard, He knows what you are going through. Trust Him and let Him show you
the way through. When difficulties come, look to Him. We are promised
victory and certainly that is great comfort when we go through the
different battles.
I recently read that just before the
Bolshevik Revolution two meetings took place in Russia at the same time
and on the same street. One was the Russian Orthodox Church leaders trying
to decide on the color of robes for clergy. The other a strategy meeting
by the leaders of what later became the Bolshevik Revolution. One had very
little impact on Russia; the other changed the course of history. Let’s
decide for God and see Him make changes in our life and the lives of those
we touch this year. To you, your family and your loved ones a very happy
and spiritually prosperous New Year. God bless.
