FAITHFUL SERVICE
(1 Cor 15:58)
"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be
ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord,
forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord."
At the tender age of eighteen, I decided
that I was one of the few good men that the Marine Corp was looking for. I
joined up. Many other young men who joined at the same time said they did
it to see the world, to experience the adventure, to take advantage of the
benefits offered, or just for the challenge. Is becoming a Christian like
that? Do we sign up as Christians for the adventure or challenge?
Certainly not. Any one who is a believer knows better. This verse tells
why we count it all joy to serve God.
REASON FOR SERVING
"Therefore my beloved brethren"
Therefore, in the context of this
chapter, refers back to the resurrection of Christ, the finished work of
salvation and the hope that is set before us. God has provided us with
marvelous promises. Believers are the first fruits of His resurrection; we’re
part of His family with precious eternal promises. Knowing all this to be
true, we serve because we long to share the good news with others that
they too may enjoy this blessed hope. God so loved the world that He gave
His only begotten Son to die for us in our place and grant eternal
salvation to all who believe. All our service is to be centered on making
the message of salvation known and clear. We have the great commission,
"Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." (Mat 28:19) Along
with the reason is the
RESOLVE IN SERVING
"steadfast, unmoveable"
The words "steadfast and unmoveable"
mean firm and persistent. Knowing what God's desire is for our lives, we
need to be about the Father's business. God equips those who are His
children with special gifts. Some have the gift of teaching, others helps,
encouragements, etc. Whatever your gift, use it for the glory of God.
Unfortunately some believers do not know their gift. That's why we need to
make every effort to find what they are and use them to bring God glory.
Often we uncover what our gifts are by doing different jobs in the local
Church. As you get involved ask yourself, “What am I doing that God is
blessing the most?” Then be steadfast in allowing Him to work in your
life through that service. Paul encourages us to "Work out your own
salvation with fear and trembling for it is God who works in you both to
will and to do His good pleasure." (Phil 2:12,13) With prayer,
submissiveness availability and willingness to take responsibility, we can
all be effective servants. That brings us to the proper
RESPONSE IN SERVING
"always abounding in the work of the Lord"
Abounding in the work of the Lord
doesn't just happen. There is a need for preparation and guidance. The
more we know about God and His will for our lives as well as the lives of
others the more effective we can be. Take every opportunity to get to know
God more. One way is to read His word. Study to show yourself approved
unto God a workman that need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
truth (2 Tim 2:15). Meditate on those things God reveals to you. Be a
prayer warrior and a praise warrior. Thank God for all His blessings and
for His blessings to others as well. "I must work the works of him
that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can
work." (John 9:4) Our lives are short and time is growing short. Are
you busy? We are to be "zealous of good works" (Tit 2:14) that
is eagerly desiring to serve Him. The finally consider the
REWARD OF SERVING
"your labor is not in vain"
The word ‘vain’ means empty or
without purpose. Believers know that serving God is never futile or empty
it is rewarding and fulfilling. It brings great joy and purpose in life.
Our labor or what could be translated wearisome toil is anything but. It
is a labor of love. All those who truly love God desire to work for Him in
gratitude for all that He has done for them. We serve God as we serve
others. "And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say
unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my
brethren, ye have done it unto me."(Mat 25:40) May this be your
prayer, “Father, make me a faithful servant. Help me as I reach out to
others with Your love.”
Albert Scweitzer, Missionary Doctor
said, “One thing I know: The only ones among you who will be really
happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve.” Have you
found how to serve? Are you busy in the work of the Lord? If not, why not?
Ask God to show you where you can be an effective and useful servant to
His honor and glory. Prayerfully consider the needs in your home,
community, or church. Get involved. There is no better way of growing and
enjoying your Christian faith than serving others. God bless |
